Olfa Nasraoui

Founding Director

Olfa Nasraoui is a Professor of Computer Engineering and Computer Science, Endowed Chair of e-commerce, and the founding director of the Knowledge Discovery and Web Mining Lab at the University of Louisville. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Engineering and Computer Science from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1999. From 2000 to 2004, she was an Assistant Professor at the University of Memphis.

Her research activities include Data Mining, Web mining; Personalization, and Computational Intelligence. She is the recipient of the National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the recipient of a best paper award in theoretical developments in computational intelligence at the Artificial Neural Networks In Engineering conference (ANNIE 2001). She has more than 160 refereed publications, including over 40 journal papers and book chapters and eight edited volumes. Her research has been funded mainly by the US NSF and by NASA. Between 2004 and 2008, she has co-organized the yearly WebKDD workshops on User Profiling and Web Usage Mining. She has served as a Program Committee member, track chair, senior program committee, and/or program Vice Chair for several Data and Web mining, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence conferences and workshops, including ACM KDD, ACM WWW, RecSys, IEEE Big Data, IEEE ICDM, SIAM SDM, AAAI, and GECCO. In summer 2015, she served as Technical Mentor/Project Lead at the Data Science for Social Good Fellowship, in the Center for Data Science and Public Policy at the University of Chicago. She is a member of ACM, ACM SigKDD, senior member of IEEE and IEEE-WIE.

She is currently an Associate Professor in the Computer Systems Engineering Department at the National University of Colombia.

Nurcan Durak

Nurcan Durak joined our lab as a PhD student in the fall of 2006. Her PhD dissertation is on coronal loop mining from solar images, as part of research grants funded by NASA and NSF. Her research interests include computer vision, machine learning, pattern recognition, and multimedia retrieval. Her research was partly funded by Grants from the National Science Foundation and NASA. She is currently at RocketFuel (after a postdoc at Sandia National Labs).

Jaafar Ben-Abdallah

Jaafar Ben-Abdallah joined our lab as a PhD student in the fall of 2009. His research interests include multimedia information retrieval and machine learning. His work is focused on Matrix Factorization algorithms and their applications to unsupervised learning, stream data clustering and multi-modal information retrieval. His research is currently funded by an NSF grant.

Artur Abdulin completed his PhD dissertation (on Inter-domain Supervised Clustering of Heterogeneous, Multi-domain Data Sets) in 2013. His research was funded by an NSF grant. His research interests include data mining, diverse/mixed data types, machine learning, clustering, classification, semi- semi-supervised learning, data exploration, social networking, and viral marketing. He is currently a Facebook (after two years at LivingSocial and at Resonate Networks).

Basheer Hawwash completed his Masters Thesis (on Mining Dynamic Web Server Logs) in Computer Engineering and Computer Science in 2008, then completed his PhD dissertation (on Stream Data Mining) in 2013. His dissertation research was funded by an NSF research grant.  His research interests include data stream clustering, tracking data stream evolution, web usage mining, recommendation systems and web personalization. He is currently at Quintiles.
